“The Cocteau Twins’ new record suggests infinite distance, or at least a massive space. Its first boom is like an avalanche.” – NME, 1983
Many have tried to describe the Cocteau Twins over the decades since they first emerged, with their music typically inspiring hyperbole and the use of words such as ethereal, otherworldy, cavernous, and, of course, most famously of all, it’s responsible for inspiring the first use of the term ‘Sonic Cathedrals’. All of that fits, and this, their second studio album, is the one that really defined their sound. It served as a template for what became so distinctive about their unique sonic world, one which would go on to influence numerous bands and artists over the years and their presence can be felt regularly today in styles as disparate as post-rock, metal, hip-hop and soul.
